This Temple Complex and adjacent Bagan Bari (Garden House) was built by Purnachandra Daw in 1889 AD to gratify his mother Kadambini Dasi. The Dawn family visited this grand riverside garden house of theirs during the Janmashtami and Rash Utsav every year. The awe-inspiring celebrations went on for nights during these occasions and month-long fairs were held in these premises. The secret of Dawn family’s fortune was the result of a trail of successful business ventures starting from coal fields in Hazaribagh, Arms and Ammunition shops throughout Eastern India to railway contracts from British.

Accommodation at Dawn Babur Bagan Bari

The main Navaratna styled Radhamadhab Temple and its surrounding six Aatchala Shiva Temples, the clock tower built in Portuguese style, the Nahabatkhana, the Natmandir with grand Corinthian Pillars, the Ghat and the Rashmancha lies in one part of the complex. The other part comprises the heritage accommodation, riverside garden, coffee shop, lawns and dining area. This Baganbari accommodates its guests in its heritage wing which comprises 02 Four Bedded rooms and 04 Double Bedded rooms. The Four bedded rooms are located in the single storey heritage wing which displays a unique influence of colonial architecture, with pillars and arched entrances. The 04 Double Bedded rooms are located in the first floor and second floor of the heritage building overlooking the Ganges.

All the rooms have been decked with period furniture and exude the charm of staying in a typical Bengali Zamindar house with their Khirki windows, Kari-Barga ceilings and chequered floors. Guests are served food in the dining hall on the ground floor and all rooms have connecting verandahs with views of the mighty Ganges. There is a manicured lawn opening up to the river where guests can laze around in the evenings under the starry sky and share stories of the past from the hosts. All standard facilities like attached western bathrooms with hot water geysers, power back-up, AC, comfy beds, couches and wardrobes are present in the rooms.

Apart from the heritage house itself, there are numerous other attractions in the complex like the century-old temples, Nahabatkhanas, the watch tower and Rasmancha of the Dawn family where Rash Purnima and Janmashtami are celebrated every year. In the evenings, you can visit the Radha Madhav Temple to find your place within the devotees witnessing the Sandhya Aarati. In the mornings, you can take a walk to the nearby Belur Math or hire a Toto to reach Dakshineshwar Kali Temple and Adyapeeth Temple.

How to reach Dawn Babur Baganbari

The nearest rail head is Belur Station. You can avail local transport like autos and rickshaws from Belur Railway Station to Dawn Babur Bagan Bari. If you are taking the road, then cross the Nivedita Setu or Vivekananda Setu and take right on State Highway 06 to reach Belur. The distance is around 12 kms. from Kolkata.
